On 28 November 2016, the new railway station for the town of Holmestrand, located in the Vestfold area, is opened for the public. This station is on the Vestfold Line, from the city of Skien to Eidsvoll through Drammen and Oslo, and belongs to the future development of a high speed rail connection of those cities.
The 350mtr long train station is located in the centre of the 12km Holmstrandsporten tunnel and is accessible through 2 entrance tunnels and a 75mtr lift shaft from atop the mountain.
In the Holmestrandsporten tunnel 2 rail tracks are located, and at the station it widens for approx 500mtr and covers 4 tracks. The station is designed for 2 passing trains at full speed whilst 2 trains are stopped at the platforms.
This project is unique in its kind and is defined by the following specific challenges:
• The construction for this train station is build inside a tunnel and hung on approx 700 hangers from the ceiling of the tunnel. Due to this positioning, each individual hanger is adjustable to each unique individual position. Final length is determined through 3D survey.
• Positioning of the concrete platforms in the main tunnel and walls in the access tunnels as all paths are under an angle.
• The combination of different materials for the station was a challenge on its own, for the hanger construction Duplex Stainless Steel is used, the main steel is hot dip galvanized (extreme high thicknesses 200mu), the secondary girders and facade are from Aluminium and for mainly architectural purposes the steel in the access tunnels and above the platforms are Corten steel.
• High architectural requirements on aesthetics of (visual) steel and cladding.
Below you'll find several videos that give an impression about how the tunnel and station were built:
